Supporting First-Generation College Students: Services and Programs Available in US Colleges and Universities

 As college and university enrollments increase in the United States, a growing number of students are becoming first-generation college students, meaning that they are the first in their families to attend college. These students often face unique challenges as they navigate the unfamiliar terrain of higher education. As a result, it is critical for colleges and universities to provide support services that can help these students succeed academically and socially.

One of the most significant challenges faced by first-generation college students is the lack of social and cultural capital that comes from growing up in a family with college-educated parents. According to a report by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), first-generation college students are less likely than their peers to have access to resources such as academic advisors, career services, and mentoring programs (Choy, 2001). These students are also more likely to come from low-income families, which can make it difficult for them to afford the cost of college.

To address these challenges, many colleges and universities have developed programs and services specifically designed to support first-generation college students. For example, some institutions have established mentoring programs that pair first-generation college students with upperclassmen or alumni who can provide guidance and support. Others have created academic support programs that provide tutoring and study skills workshops to help students succeed in their coursework. Many colleges and universities also offer financial aid and scholarship programs specifically for first-generation college students.

In addition to these targeted support services, many colleges and universities have also taken steps to create a more welcoming and inclusive campus culture for first-generation college students. This can include offering orientation programs that address the unique challenges faced by these students, as well as creating student organizations and affinity groups that provide a sense of community and belonging.

Despite these efforts, there is still much work to be done to ensure that first-generation college students receive the support they need to succeed. According to a report by the Pell Institute for the Study of Opportunity in Higher Education, first-generation college students are less likely to graduate than their peers, with only 11% earning a bachelor's degree within six years (Choy, 2001). To address this issue, colleges and universities must continue to invest in support services and programs that meet the unique needs of first-generation college students.

The Importance of Online Discussions in Online Learning Environments

 As online classes become more common, online discussions have become an important component of the virtual learning environment. In online classes, online discussions can replace the traditional face-to-face discussions that take place in a physical classroom setting. Online discussions offer unique advantages such as flexibility, accessibility, and convenience to students who may be studying remotely. In this blog post, we will discuss the importance of online discussions in online classes and how they contribute to a meaningful and engaging learning experience.

Online discussions offer several benefits that contribute to an effective and engaging learning experience. Firstly, online discussions promote critical thinking and collaborative learning. As stated by Zhao and McDougall (2018), online discussions provide an opportunity for students to reflect on their own opinions and ideas while also considering and evaluating the opinions of their peers. This process leads to critical thinking and enhances the overall learning experience. In addition, online discussions encourage collaborative learning by creating a sense of community among students, allowing them to share their experiences, knowledge, and expertise with each other (Lin, Chen, & Chen, 2019).

Secondly, online discussions promote active learning. Active learning involves engaging students in the learning process through activities that require them to think, analyze, and apply their knowledge (Prince, 2004). Online discussions provide an opportunity for students to engage in active learning by participating in discussions, analyzing ideas, and synthesizing information from various sources. This active learning approach has been shown to improve learning outcomes and increase student engagement (Marek & Cavalier, 2019).

Thirdly, online discussions provide feedback and assessment opportunities. In traditional classrooms, feedback is usually provided through face-to-face interactions between teachers and students. In online classes, feedback can be provided through online discussions, where teachers can provide feedback to individual students or to the entire class (Xu & Jaggars, 2014). Additionally, online discussions can be used as an assessment tool to evaluate students' understanding of course material (Lin et al., 2019).

Lastly, online discussions can enhance social presence and reduce feelings of isolation. Social presence refers to the degree to which students feel connected to each other and to the course content (Richardson & Swan, 2003). Online discussions can enhance social presence by creating a sense of community and promoting interactions among students. This can be particularly important for online learners who may feel isolated or disconnected from the learning environment (Marek & Cavalier, 2019).

In conclusion, online discussions are an important component of online classes as they promote critical thinking, active learning, feedback, assessment opportunities, and social presence. Online discussions provide unique benefits that cannot be achieved through traditional face-to-face discussions. As online classes continue to grow in popularity, it is essential to recognize the importance of online discussions in creating a meaningful and engaging learning experience for students.

High Impact Practices (HIP) in Teaching College-Level Mathematics

 Mathematics is a subject that many students find challenging and intimidating. However, mathematics is also a subject that can foster critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills. How can we teach mathematics in a way that engages students and helps them achieve their learning goals?

One possible answer is to use High Impact Practices (HIP) in teaching mathematics. HIP are instructional strategies that have been shown to increase student learning, retention, engagement, and success. According to the Association of American Colleges & Universities (AAC&U), HIP share some common features:

  • They demand considerable time and effort from students
  • They involve interactions with faculty and peers
  • They provide frequent and substantive feedback
  • They connect learning to real-world contexts
  • They require reflection on learning outcomes and processes

Some examples of HIP are:

  • Learning communities: Students take two or more courses together as a cohort, creating a sense of belonging and collaboration.
  • Undergraduate research: Students participate in original inquiry or creative work under the guidance of a faculty mentor.
  • Capstone projects: Students integrate and apply their learning in a culminating experience that showcases their skills and knowledge.
  • Community-based learning: Students engage in service or experiential learning activities that address community needs or issues.

These practices can be adapted and implemented in mathematics courses at various levels. For instance, students can work on mathematical modeling projects that involve real-world data and scenarios; they can conduct research on historical or contemporary topics in mathematics; they can present their findings or solutions to authentic audiences; they can tutor or mentor younger students or peers in mathematics.

Research suggests that HIP can have positive effects on student outcomes such as academic performance, retention rates, graduation rates, satisfaction, motivation, self-efficacy, identity development, civic engagement, intercultural competence, and career readiness (Kuh et al., 2010). Moreover, HIP can help reduce achievement gaps among students from different backgrounds and groups (Finley & McNair 2013).

However, HIPs are not magic bullets that work automatically for every student. They require careful design, implementation, and assessment to ensure their quality and effectiveness. Some factors that influence the impact of the HIP are:

  • The alignment of HIP with course goals and outcomes
  • The level of challenge and support provided to students
  • The degree of integration and coherence among different HIP
  • The extent of student involvement and ownership of their learning
  • The frequency and duration of HIP experiences

Therefore, teachers who want to use HIP in their mathematics courses need to consider these factors when planning, facilitating and evaluating their instruction. They also need to collaborate with other faculty, staff, and community partners who can support them in implementing HIP.

In conclusion, HIPs are promising practices that can enhance mathematics teaching and learning at the college level. They can help students develop mathematical skills as well as other competencies that are essential for life-long learning. However, HIPs require intentional design, implementation, and assessment to ensure their quality and effectiveness.
